Re: DEEPER KNOWLEDGE NEW RELEASES - MAY 2013

Interesting to read all of that, even (if I remember well) you two had the exact same discussion some months ago

I just want to ask something, naively. IF it's not possible without MasterTapes (and even with!) to have a proper reissue as good as the original, then why continuing to reissue on vinyl ? I'm a vinyl addict as everybody here, so I can imagine your answer. But isn't it a desesperate attempt to SAVE vinyl, while all that remains is the "material" side of vinyl, and not the "audiophile" quality side (that we all defend when it's Cds vs Vinyls discussion) ? Just a question, hope I don't vex anyone :)

i don't think just because a reissue is not equal to or better than the original, then that means it's not worth doing. and obviously right? i've released a ton of records, haha. in the end, some are as good (or in a few cases, better!), but many aren't. how close to or far from the 'mark' of the original they are, is a bit in the eye (or ears) of the listener. and anyway, it's almost beside the point. understanding what's possible in 2013 is a matter of being realistic, and being realistic means understanding the context of and the circumstances under which this music was largely made and has endured. Nohay refers to this in one of his posts, and i talk about a little in the interview w/ United Reggae. my overall feelings are summed up in the NB on our website, nicely and succinctly. and it's not about "saving" vinyl. there will always be vinyl...there always has been and there always will be. just because i prefer vinyl doesn't mean i'm on a quest to save it. and truthfully, while i do believe vinyl sounds better than CD, that's not even the reason why i like it most. and further, i'm not an audiophile. and i don't believe in the equation of some hard truth of "vinyl = audiophile format." surely anyone who listens to Jamaican-made records understands that to not be a pure truth, yes? haha. i do this because i like it, because i know other people like it, and i think it's a worthwhile thing to do, for many many reasons. i do my best within the context and circumstances. none of those reasons have anything to do with trying to make an audiophile-grade product (whatever that means anyway, as that's a very vague notion). the fact of the matter is maybe most simply that this is the music i like, and i like records. and most of the people who like this music, also like records. so we make records, as best we can. at the end of the day, like with anything, you do something you're happy with and you hope it pleases others as well. if i was putting out this kind of music on CD, i might as well be flushing money down the toilet. and also, the obvious fact looms that yes, this is a business, and there are business concerns here too. i'm trying to create a platform here, and i have to work within the boundaries of what's possible, technically and financially. the platform is a way to bring very good and rarified music, in the format which they desire, which also happens to be the format it was traditionally presented in, and the format i like most.
is that an OK answer?

As astro said, a holy grail, legendary tune!
concerning the sound, i sadly don't have the og, but a wave recording of the waricka press, and your clip sounds much cleaner, is it possible that your repress sounds better than the orig? or is my rip not so ggod?

that's up to the listener i guess but i don't think the Waricka pressing is that great, plus the vocal on that pressing is missing a few seconds of the intro. this reissue is carefully mastered from the original master tapes which Sir Collins thankfully preserved very well for all these years. i haven't heard the Music Wheel pressing but i've heard it's mastered at low volume seeing as how it's 2 songs per side on a 7"...

a friend of mine got the OG and to me sounds ok but the big pitty of the 1st press in the missing intro which i really hate (findable anyway on another press)

Will get those ones for sure...it's years i was hunting them and it's very nice to see that the RE is more complete than the OG one!

Just to know...what's on the flip side of the Sir Harry instrumental? A version to it or the B side of the released 7''?

the Sir Harry has the same version side as Invaders, the straight instrumental cut as on the Waricka 7"...it was a source of some debate between Sir Collins and me, what to put on the Sir Harry B-side...in the end we both rather put the same version again rather than another cut which is unrelated. unfortunately there is no other cuts to this rhythm besides these three, as the tapes were searched. i was hoping to find another vocal, unreleased. but we did find some other surprises along the way, all going well there will be some more interesting Sir Collins material seeing the light of day in the future...
